Dishwasher Leak: Find It, Stop It, Dry It

If a dishwasher is leaking, cancel the cycle and shut off the dishwasher's water supply, usually a valve under the kitchen sink. Unplug the unit only if the floor is dry, pull out the wet items, towel up the water, and look for where it came from: the door seal, the supply line, the drain hose, or a failed base. Then check the subfloor and nearby cabinets, because dishwasher water often hides under the kick plate.

Stop the cycle

Cancel the dishwasher immediately so it stops drawing and draining water.

Shut off the water

Close the supply valve under the sink. If there is no valve or you cannot reach it, shut off the main and call a plumber.

Dry the floor fast

Towels and a mop clear the visible water. Pull the kick plate if you are comfortable, and check beneath the unit.

Look for the source

Door seal gaskets, cracked supply hoses, loose drain clamps, and failed flow-through assemblies are the usual suspects.

Check materials for water damage

Why does water damage from dishwashers hide?

Dishwashers sit low, so leaks run straight to the floor and under cabinets. Small drips can soak plywood subfloor and cabinet bases for weeks before the damage becomes visible as a musty smell, warped flooring, or a stain near the baseboard. That is why a dishwasher leak deserves a moisture check, not just a towel.

Can I run the dishwasher again after a leak?

Not until the leak is fixed and checked. A supply-side leak can spray water during every cycle, and a drain-side leak can back water up repeatedly. Have the unit inspected and tested before running it again, especially if the subfloor got wet.
