The Three Categories of Water Damage Explained

Category 1 is clean water from a sanitary source: a burst supply pipe, an overflowing sink, a rainwater leak from above. It poses no significant health risk to healthy people and, when handled within the first day, most affected materials can potentially be dried and saved. The catch: clean water does not stay clean. Category 1 can move to Category 2 or 3 in under 48 hours as it picks up contaminants from the building, which is another reason speed matters.

Category 2 water carries significant contamination and could cause discomfort or illness. Think overflow from a washing machine loaded with detergent, a dishwasher discharge, or water from a toilet bowl without feces. It warrants careful personal protection, and porous materials it touches are more likely to be removed. Category 2 is sometimes called gray water.

Category 3 is grossly contaminated water, known as black water: sewage backups, water rising from outside after storms or floods, and water that has sat long enough to support microbial growth. It poses serious health risks, and everything it touches is treated as contaminated. Porous materials, carpet, padding, drywall, and upholstery are almost always removed, and the space is contained, cleaned, sanitized, and dried by professionals. Occupants stay out until the zone is cleared.
