Why do basement floods keep happening?

Basements sit below grade, so water from many sources ends up there: rising groundwater, storm runoff through window wells and floor cracks, failed sump pumps, and internal pipe breaks. In areas with clay soils, like much of southeast Michigan, groundwater presses against foundation walls after heavy rain, and aging sumps and drain tile do the rest of the work.

How long does basement drying take?

Longer than main-floor drying. Below-grade spaces stay cooler and more humid, so basement drying usually runs a week or more with heavy dehumidification.
